AGAPLESION, Bethanien hospital/ Geriatric Centre at the University of Heidelberg (BETHANIEN)

The Bethanien Hospital /Geriatric Centre at the University of Heidelberg is one of the largest geriatric hospitals in Germany (112 places for acute care, 72 places for geriatric rehabilitation, 24 places in a day clinic and associated ambulant services) including geriatric medicine wards as well as ward- and post-ward rehabilitation, a rehabilitation sport centre for older, multi-morbid patients, several associated seniors‘ homes with more than 600 residents and an academy for professional training and education in geriatric medicine, therapy and care. It is a superior geriatric centre as defined in the care plan for geriatric patients by the state of Baden-Württemberg (Landesgeriatrieplan Baden-Württemberg). It is an academic hospital of the University of Heidelberg, responsible for the academic training of medical students at themedical faculty of University of Heidelberg.

The research department cooperates with several national and international scientific and technical partners and is part of the Network on Ageing Research at the University of Heidelberg which connects applied clinical research with basic research approaches including non-university research institutions such as the German Cancer Research Centre, the European Molecular Biology Laboratories, the Max-Planck-Institutions and the Central Institute for Mental Health.

Role in I-SUPPORT:

  • BETHANIEN will be responsible for coordinating the overall user requirements process (WP1), with the collaboration of all partners. They will also coordinate the definition of use case scenarios and I-SUPPORT functional specifications.
  • BETHANIEN will be one of the 3 I-SUPPORT partners bringing expertise about user and medical/health perspectives and 1 of the pilot sites where the I-SUPPORT system will be installed and tested with end users.
  • BETHANIEN, with the full collaboration of FSL and FH FFM will lead the analysis of the evaluation results obtained by the evaluation activities. Primary and secondary outcomes will be defined and results from all evaluation activities will be synthesized into two comprehensive and informative reports.
